The Walking City
Ambulatoris, the Walking City, a place that is constantly shifting just as the people on it are constantly growing.
Ambulatoris is a unique, mobile kingdom built atop a colossal walking platform known as the Ambulatorium. It is neither a living creature nor a construct created artificially, instead existing somewhere between the two. The Ambulatorium travels across vast landscapes, moving over both land and, more commonly, water. This allows the kingdom to relocate toward fertile regions, avoid natural disasters, and explore new territories as it continues its journey. The city itself is filled with tall, emerald-topped towers and intricate structures that reflect a mixture of artistry and advanced engineering.
The kingdom is governed by a council known as the Migrant Assembly, made up of representatives from different sectors of society. The council is led by the Nomarch, a leader chosen for their wisdom and ability to guide the kingdom through its constantly changing journey, but above all else to ensure the safety of the being that carries the kingdom. Most decisions are made collectively through a vote, with a focus on the welfare and sustainability of Ambulatoris. Matters directly involving the Ambulatorium itself, however, are treated differently and are not handled in the same way as ordinary political decisions.
Above even the council stands the Brain Tower, a massive tower positioned at the center of the kingdom. No one is permitted to enter or leave it, and it is not controlled by any known person. Instead, the tower itself is alive and carries out almost robotic calculations, constantly working to ensure its own safety and, by extension, the safety of the kingdom resting upon it.
Ambulatoris maintains a diverse economy built around trade, craftsmanship, and innovative technology. The kingdom’s mobility allows it to interact with numerous settlements and regions, making it easier to acquire exotic goods and resources than it would be for most stationary kingdoms. Artisans and engineers are highly valued throughout Ambulatoris, producing everything from intricate jewelry to advanced machinery. The kingdom also benefits greatly from the natural resources found in the lands it passes through, often gathering large amounts of materials before continuing onward.
The culture of Ambulatoris is vibrant and constantly changing, reflecting the kingdom’s endless journey and the new people, ideas, and traditions it encounters along the way. Its inhabitants, known as Ambulators, are adaptable and resilient, placing great value on innovation, exploration, and community. They are also highly welcoming toward outsiders and unfamiliar ideas, something that has naturally developed through generations of constant travel and interaction with different regions.
Festivals and celebrations often take place whenever Ambulatoris arrives somewhere new, usually centered around the experiences, traditions, and discoveries gathered throughout its travels. The people are also known to take part in festivals held by other kingdoms when given the opportunity, allowing them to experience and adopt aspects of a wide variety of cultures and celebrations.
The Cultural
The culture, society, and religion of a Kingdom shapes the foundation of it.
Ambulatoris is protected by a capable defence force known as the Amber Knights. They are trained not only in traditional combat, but also in the unique challenges that come with defending a constantly moving city. Many are capable of freely taking to the air or surviving underwater for extended periods, allowing them to continue fighting regardless of where the Ambulatorium happens to be travelling. The Ambulatorium itself also possesses defensive mechanisms and is capable of moving quickly to avoid threats or destroying anything that attempts to obstruct its path.
The people of Ambulatoris do not follow any single god or major religion. Their constant travel exposes them to countless beliefs and traditions, leading the kingdom to remain open toward religion as a whole without enforcing any particular faith. Because of this, Ambulatoris does not establish official religious buildings, instead allowing its people to practice whatever beliefs they choose.
Several important locations serve different roles throughout the moving kingdom. Nomarch’s Tower acts as the main center of government, where the Nomarch and Migrant Assembly gather to make decisions and oversee Ambulatoris. At the center of the kingdom stands the Brain Tower, believed to contain the brain of the Ambulatorium and completely forbidden to approach or enter. The Trade Plaza is a constantly active marketplace where merchants exchange goods collected from the many regions the kingdom encounters, giving it access to a wide variety of exotic items.
The Workshop District serves as the center of craftsmanship and innovation, where artisans and engineers create, maintain, and repair everything from ordinary goods to complex machinery. The Amber Knights Barracks houses the kingdom’s defence force and contains the equipment and planning spaces needed to protect a city that never remains in one place for long. Across Ambulatoris are also several Observation Decks, elevated platforms that provide broad views of the surrounding landscape and are used both for navigation and for simply watching the world pass by.
What defines Ambulatoris most is its constant movement. Its mobile infrastructure allows the kingdom to escape natural disasters, seek out fertile regions, gather resources, and maintain trade across enormous distances. The Ambulatorium itself remains one of the kingdom’s greatest mysteries, combining traits of life and machinery in a way few fully understand. Through constant travel and interaction with different peoples, Ambulatoris has also become a cultural melting pot, shaped by the many traditions, technologies, and ideas it has gathered throughout its journey.
