Tree Of Life

Luminara, the Kingdom within the Tree of Life, a place where light and joy forever covers the people.

Luminara is a small but powerful kingdom built around and within an enormous ancient tree known as the Elderwood Tree, though the people of the kingdom worship it as the Tree of Life. The kingdom extends vertically, with structures built seamlessly into the tree’s branches, trunk, vines, and even its massive leaves, while the rest of the city spreads around its base. Countless glowing lanterns and bioluminescent plants illuminate Luminara, giving the entire kingdom a magical and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Rather than being ruled by a council, Luminara is governed by a single person known as the Supreme Luminary. This position is not decided through a vote, instead belonging to the founding family of the kingdom, with the heir taking over once the previous ruler passes. The Supreme Luminary is seen as a representative of the Tree of Life itself and is believed to be blessed by the tree to carry out its will. Beneath them is a council made up of representatives from the different groups that live within the kingdom. This council handles the more mundane matters of governance, allowing the Supreme Luminary to step in only when needed.

Luminara’s economy thrives on artisan crafts, magical goods, and eco-tourism, though the kingdom is not reliant on any of them to survive. Its artisans create unique items from the natural resources of the Elderwood Tree and the surrounding forests, allowing the kingdom to earn a great deal from goods that cannot easily be found elsewhere. Magical herbs, potions, and enchanted artifacts are also important trade goods, as the Elven people within Luminara are considered some of the best at their respective crafts. Tourism is still relatively new, but it continues to grow as outsiders are drawn to the kingdom’s unusual beauty. Above all else, however, Luminara does not depend on outside trade or income, having survived in isolation for hundreds of years without external contact.

Luminara’s culture is deeply connected to nature, magic, and the Tree of Life. Its inhabitants, known as Luminarians, are made up largely of Elves and other people with a strong connection to nature, many of whom are skilled in different crafts and magical arts. Festivals celebrating the cycles of nature, such as the Festival of Lights and the Elderwood Bloom, form an important part of the kingdom’s cultural identity. Music, dance, and storytelling are also cherished traditions, with performances often held in the open air or within the tree’s Grand Hall. The kingdom also holds festivals dedicated specifically to the Tree of Life, where tributes are given to the tree that they believe protects them and allows their lives to continue thriving.

Despite being a peaceful kingdom, Luminara maintains a small but highly skilled defence force. Very little is known about them outside the kingdom, largely because Luminara has never had a reason to openly make use of them. Its long isolation and the natural protection provided by the Elderwood Tree and surrounding land give the kingdom an additional layer of security.

The Cultural

The culture, society, and religion of a Kingdom shapes the foundation of it.

The people of Luminara worship the gods of the world like anyone else and do not deny the existence of any particular god. Worship of Shina is especially common, as the Goddess of Creation holds a strong connection to the kingdom’s way of life and its relationship with nature. Alongside this, the people also pay tribute to and worship the Tree of Life itself, the enormous tree they call home, believing that it grants them protection and keeps the kingdom safe.

Several important locations are spread throughout the tree and the city surrounding it. The Elderwood Tree itself forms the heart of Luminara, housing homes, shops, and public spaces within its vast trunk and branches, while the kingdom’s palace sits near its highest reaches. The Grand Hall serves as a large gathering place within the tree where the council meets and major events are held. The Market of Wonders is one of the kingdom’s main centers of trade, offering artisan crafts, magical goods, and locally grown produce.

Deeper within the Elderwood Tree lies the Shina Sanctuary, the largest temple in the kingdom dedicated to the Goddess of Creation. Lantern Bridge connects different sections of Luminara and is illuminated throughout, offering views across the city and the surrounding forest. The Luminary Gardens are filled with bioluminescent plants and serve as a quiet place where citizens and visitors can relax and remain close to nature.

Much of what makes Luminara unique comes from the way the kingdom has been built directly into the Tree of Life. Its vertical layout creates a city spread across multiple levels, with buildings and pathways running through the tree rather than simply surrounding it. The use of glowing lanterns and bioluminescent flora gives Luminara its characteristic glow, while its many festivals continue to reflect the kingdom’s close connection to nature, magic, and the ancient tree that has sheltered its people for generations.
